Ein Bauernregel
A Farmer's Rule.
Wenn im Februar die Mücken schwärmen,
muß man im März die Ohren wärmen.
Lindsey Osborne in German 1310 was the first person to translate the Bauernregel and April Guy in German 2310 wrote a detailed, informative explanation of what the farmer's expected if mosquitoes swarmed in February. Thanks, Lindsey and April, for your contributions!
Lindsey's translation.
If in February the mosquitoes swarm,
then in March you must keep your ears
warm.
April's explanation of the Farmer's Rule.
The farmer is
predicting that if it is warm in February, warm enough
for mosquitoes to be swarming, then it will be much
cooler in March so you'll be needing to warm your
ears.
But why? My best guess would be that, like the
Pennsylvania Germans who kept an eye on the
groundhog's shadow in February, they would wait to
plant their crops if February was warm because they
knew cold weather would return; meanwhile, if February
was too cool for the mosquitoes, then crops could be
planted early because spring would be coming early.
