Classes
Each class period you are expected to have completed the assigned readings and the study questions to the readings and be prepared to discuss them (10 percent of total grade). From time to time, you will be asked to prepare a brief presentation and lead discussion on a major milestone or major personality of German cultural history (10 percent of total grade).
Testing
Testing will consist of a mid-term exam (20 percent of total grade) and a final exam (30 percent of total grade).
Term Paper
You will also be required to submit a term paper (30 percent of total grade) on some aspect of German culture which interests you in particular. No later than four weeks into the semester, you should make an appointment with your instructor to discuss the topic you wish to write on. A number of your sources for the paper must come from German-language sources on the Internet which can be found through Yahoo! Deutschland at www.yahoo.de or through another German-language search engine. Even if you do not quote material from all Internet sources you find, they should still be entered in an appendix to your list of works consulted.
Credit By Examination
Students who have studied a foreign language in which they are not native speakers, and have not previously received undergraduate credit in that language at a college or university, may receive credit by examination. Such credit is limited to a maximum of six hours in a language or twelve hours within the department and is granted by fulfilling the following criteria:
1. Achievement of a satisfactory score on a proficiency examination administered by the Department of Foreign Languages.
2. Satisfactory completion, with a minimum grade of 'B', of the next sequential foreign language course above the level for which credit is to be awarded."
Americans with Disabilities Act
The University of Central Arkansas adheres to the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. If you need an accommodation under this Act due to a disability, contact the Office of Disability Support Services at 450-3135.
Academic Integrity
All students are expected to do their own work, especially
on tests and research papers. This instructor does not tolerate any kind of
cheating on tests or plagiarism in research papers and reports. Students
discovered cheating or committing plagiarism will receive an automatic failing
grade for the course and will be reported to the appropriate university
authorities. See also pages 28 and following in the 2000-2001 Student Handbook.
