Affectionately known as the "Wiener Dog" the short-legged Dachshund has been used to hunt badger, fox, and deer since the 16th century. Fearless, tenacious, and keen with his nose, the Dachshund's short stature makes it exceptionally easy to route it's enemy from underground. Today's Dachshund has been classified in several sub-categories: standard and miniature, smooth-haired, long-haired, and wire-haired. Although the breed is classified under the "Hound" group, they are more like a terrier in working ability with the appearance and voice of a hound. It is thought that the breed may have a distant cousin in the French Basset Hound. Dachshunds make excellent family pets, and do well in the country or city. They require a daily walk to stay in good health.
