Dear Students,

Can you believe it? It's Week Number 6! The semester is now more than one-third finished. I hope all of you new students are settling in to your new home and getting used to life in the USA. Please remember our discussion about culture shock during orientation. If you have problems, don't hesitate to contact one of your instructors. We've "been there and done that"!

Speaking of contacting your instructors, please don't forget that if you are absent because of sickness or some emergency, you need to contact your instructors YOURSELF. Please don't send a message with a friend. Sometimes people forget to relay the messages! All of your instructors have voice mail, so just call and leave a message if we aren't in our offices. Here are our phone numbers:

Mrs. Bowles: 450-5097
Mr. Marshall: 450-5096
Mrs. Gallagher: 450-3201
Ms. Schaefer: 450-5120

Using the telephone to leave a message is good speaking practice, anyway!

I would also like to let you know that Mr. Marshall, Mrs. Bowles, and I will not be here Tuesday, February 27 through Friday, March 2. We are going to a conference for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages in St. Louis, Missouri.

Don't worry — we aren't taking a vacation! We will be learning about new trends in teaching English as a second language and better ways to support international students. We will come back with lots of good ideas.

While we're gone, Mrs. G will be doing some special activities with you. She will also be teaching the TOEFL class on Tuesday, February 27 and Thursday, March 1. Don't forget that you will have a Practice TOEFL test on Thursday — don't be late or absent!

Again, I hope you are all having a good semester and learning a lot. Please let me know if I can help you or answer any questions.

Sincerely,

Lynn Ramage Schaefer
