Wednesday, October 24, 2001Dear Students,Mid-term is here, and most of you have probably received your grades by now. If you haven't received your grades, please see me — this means that your address is wrong in the UCA computer system, and it needs to be corrected! I would like to take this opportunity to remind you of several important benefits connected to your grades. Finishing IEP If you are in Level 3 and you receive all As and Bs in your IEP classes this semester, you can start your undergraduate degree program next semester even if you do not take TOEFL or receive less than 500 (173 on the computerized test) on TOEFL. If you receive 500 or more on TOEFL in any level, you can start your undergraduate degree program next semester. Concurrent Courses Next Semester If your TOEFL score is between 475 and 499 (152-172 on the computerized test) and you have a GPA of 3.0 or better, next semester you will be able to take two concurrent academic courses along with your IEP courses. If your GPA is below 3.0, you will be able to take one concurrent course. If your TOEFL score is between 450 and 474 (133 and 151 on the computerized test), next semester you will be able to take one concurrent course along with your IEP courses. If you are currently in Level 2 and do not get 450 or more on TOEFL (133 on the computerized test), but your GPA is 3.5 or better, next semester you will be able to take one concurrent academic course along with your IEP courses. Remember — you must be admitted to UCA, not just to IEP, to take concurrent courses. If you are not sure about your admission status, please see Lisa Shoemake in the Office of International Programs (or see me and I will ask Lisa). Out-of-State Tuition Scholarship One IEP student will receive an out-of-state tuition scholarship for Spring 2002. This scholarship will be based on grades, attendance, and a personal statement. Grade requirement — You must have a 3.5 GPA.
Students will be able to apply for the out-of-state tuition scholarship after the Thanksgiving break. A committee of IEP teachers, International Programs staff members, and other UCA faculty members will review the applications and choose the winner. Attendance Policy Reminder Don't forget the IEP attendance policy. If you miss more than 10 class meetings in a M-F class (Academic Writing & Grammar or Academic Classroom Skills), 8 class meetings in a MWF class (Pronunciation, Conversation, & Public Speaking or Vocabulary Building), or 7 class meetings in a T-TH class (TOEFL Preparation), you will be dropped from the class with a grade of WF. If you drop below 12 hours, you will be out of status. Please see me if you have questions about any of the information above. I hope you're having a good semester. It will be over before you know it, so take advantage of it! Sincerely, Lynn Ramage SchaeferInterim Coordinator Department of World Languages, Literatures, & Cultures |
