Monday, January 21, 2002Dear Students,First things first: Welcome to the Intensive English Program, the University of Central Arkansas, and Conway! We are so glad you're here. We hope that you have many wonderful experiences during your stay with us. Classes got off to a great start last week. I have heard from all your teachers that you worked hard in class and spoke lots of English last week, and I had the same feeling about my classes, too. It is good to have motivated students who participate in class. Please keep up the good work all semester long! Please take time to meet your classmates, learn their names, and get to know them better. You have the opportunity to learn about people and cultures all over the world, not just about the United States. I believe that learning about other cultures brings the world closer together and makes it a better place. Wars and conflicts happen when people don't try to understand each other. We need to remember that differences in cultures are just differences, not wrong beliefs or actions. If we can remember this and help others to learn this, we can make the world a more peaceful place. Don't forget — when my door is open, you are welcome. Please stop by if you have any questions or problems, or if you just want to say hello! Have a great semester! Sincerely, Lynn Ramage SchaeferInterim Coordinator Department of World Languages, Literatures, & Cultures |
